Everything you need to know about beautifying JavaScript

What does this do?

Reformats minified or poorly-indented JavaScript with consistent spacing, indentation, and line breaks — turning code that's technically valid but visually unreadable back into something you can actually follow and debug.

When you actually need this

  • Reading minified production JavaScript to debug an issue in a live site.
  • Reviewing code pulled from an obfuscated or bundled source before you can understand what it does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this rename variables or change the code's logic?

No — only whitespace, indentation and line breaks change. The code runs exactly the same before and after; nothing about its behavior, variable names, or logic is touched.

Will this work on heavily minified code with no spaces at all?

Yes — formatting is based on tracking braces, brackets and semicolons, not on existing whitespace, so it reconstructs structure even from a single densely packed line.

Does it respect strings so braces inside them aren't miscounted?

Yes — the beautifier tracks whether it's inside a quoted string (including backtick template literals) and leaves everything inside untouched, so a brace or semicolon character inside a string won't throw off the indentation.

Does this tool send my code to a server?

Yes — it's sent to our servers to format and the result is returned to you; nothing is stored.

Is this tool free to use?

Yes — completely free, with no signup and no usage limits for casual use.
