Everything you need to know about converting PDF to Word
What does PDF to Word conversion do?
A PDF is designed to look identical everywhere — it's not built to be edited. Converting to Word (.docx) extracts the text, layout structure, tables and images from the PDF and rebuilds them as an editable document, so you can revise content instead of retyping it from scratch.
When you actually need this
- Updating an old document you only have as a final PDF — a contract template, an old resume, a form.
- Reusing content from a PDF report into a new Word document without retyping it.
- Collaborative editing — a PDF can't be commented on and revised the way a Word doc can in Google Docs or Word's track changes.
What carries over well — and what doesn't
Straightforward documents — reports, letters, contracts, resumes with standard formatting — convert cleanly, with paragraphs, headings, and simple tables preserved. Complex layouts (multi-column magazine-style pages, heavy graphic design, overlapping text boxes) often need minor manual touch-up afterward, since Word's layout model isn't identical to a PDF's fixed positioning. This is a limitation of the two formats being fundamentally different, not something any converter fully solves.
The one thing this tool doesn't do: read scanned text
PDF to Word extracts text that already exists as text in the PDF. If your PDF is a scanned image of a document — meaning you can't select or search its text in the first place — converting it to Word directly will produce a blank or image-only result. Run it through PDF OCR first to extract the actual text, and convert to Word after.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the formatting stay exactly the same?
Text, headings, tables and images are preserved closely, but very complex layouts (multi-column magazines, heavy design work) may need minor manual touch-up after conversion — this is a limitation of the PDF/Word formats, not the tool.
Does this work on scanned PDFs?
Scanned PDFs are images, not text — run them through PDF OCR first to make the text extractable, then convert to Word.
What file do I get back?
A standard .docx file compatible with Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice.
Why did I get a blank or image-only Word document?
Your PDF was likely a scan with no real text in it — run PDF OCR on it first to extract actual text, then convert to Word.
Will tables convert correctly?
Simple tables generally convert cleanly into editable Word tables; very complex or nested table layouts may need minor manual adjustment afterward.
