Calorie Calculator

Calculate daily caloric needs based on activity level

102 visits

Calorie Calculator estimates your Basal Metabolic Rate (Mifflin-St Jeor formula), multiplies it by an activity-level factor to estimate your maintenance calories (your TDEE), and shows targets 250 and 500 calories below or above that for mild or standard weight loss and gain.

Everything you need to know about daily calorie needs

How daily calorie needs are estimated

This starts from your Basal Metabolic Rate (the energy your body uses at complete rest) and adjusts it based on your activity level, since someone doing manual labor or intense exercise burns significantly more than someone with a sedentary desk job at the exact same age, weight, and height.

An important note

This gives a general estimate based on standard formulas โ€” individual metabolism varies, and anyone with specific health or weight-management goals should treat this as a starting reference point, not medical guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between BMR and the calorie number this tool gives me?

BMR is calories burned at complete rest. This tool multiplies that by an activity-level factor (1.2 for sedentary up to 1.9 for very active) to estimate your total daily calories including movement and exercise, often called TDEE.

How should I choose my activity level?

Be honest rather than aspirational โ€” most people overestimate it. "Sedentary" means a desk job with little or no exercise; "light" means exercising roughly 1โ€“3 days a week. Choosing one level too high will overstate your calorie needs.

What do the weight-loss and weight-gain targets mean?

They're your maintenance calories adjusted by 250 or 500 calories in either direction โ€” a smaller gap for a gradual change, a larger one for a faster change. Very low intakes aren't shown, since cutting too far isn't safe without professional guidance.

Does this tool send my numbers to a server?

Yes โ€” your figures are sent to our servers to compute the result and the result is returned to you; we don't store the values.

Is this medical or dietary advice?

No. This is a general estimate, not medical or dietary advice โ€” speak to a doctor or registered dietitian before making a significant change to your eating.
