Everything you need to know about keyword density
What is keyword density, really?
Keyword density is simply how often a word or phrase appears relative to the total word count of a page. It was a much bigger ranking factor in early search engines than it is today — modern search engines focus far more on topical relevance and natural language than on hitting a specific keyword percentage.
When you actually need this
- Sanity-checking a draft isn't accidentally over-repeating a phrase to the point of reading unnaturally (keyword stuffing).
- Spotting an underused target keyword that should probably appear a bit more given the topic.
There's no magic percentage
Don't chase a specific keyword density target — write naturally for the reader first, and use this as a sanity check rather than a goal to hit. Modern search engines penalize obvious keyword stuffing more than they reward density.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is density calculated?
A word's count divided by the total word count, as a percentage — so a word appearing 5 times in a 500-word text has a 1% density.
Why are short words like "a" or "to" excluded?
Words of two characters or fewer are filtered out before counting, since common short function words would otherwise dominate the results without being meaningful for SEO purposes.
Is there an ideal keyword density to aim for?
There's no single correct number — modern SEO generally favors natural, readable writing over hitting a specific density target, since search engines have moved well past simple keyword-counting algorithms.
