Everything you need to know about image metadata (EXIF)
What is EXIF metadata?
Most photos â especially from phones and digital cameras â carry hidden EXIF metadata: camera model, exposure settings, timestamp, and often the exact GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken. None of this is visible when you look at the image; it's embedded in the file itself.
When you actually need this
- Checking what a photo reveals before sharing it publicly â GPS data in particular can expose a home address.
- Verifying when and how a photo was taken, for organizing an archive or checking authenticity.
Found something you don't want to share?
Remove Image Metadata strips this information out entirely, producing a copy of the image with no embedded EXIF data.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this tool modify my image?
No â it only reads and displays the existing metadata; the file itself is never altered or re-saved.
What's the "orientation" value I sometimes see?
It's the EXIF orientation flag many cameras and phones embed to indicate how the image should be rotated for correct viewing, separate from the actual pixel dimensions stored in the file.
If I want to remove this metadata instead of just viewing it, what do I use?
Remove Image Metadata strips EXIF, GPS, and color-profile data by re-encoding the image clean â use that once you've reviewed what's there with this tool.
Does this tool send my image to a server?
Yes â your image is uploaded securely, read, and deleted from our servers within 1 hour.
Is this tool free to use?
Yes â completely free, with no signup required.
